This year the My Little Pony Fair is coming to the land of the Delta Blues, resting place of the King of Rock-N-Roll. The Fair Staff would like to welcome you to the city of Memphis, Tennessee!
This section of our site will be dedicated to helping you learn a bit more about the sights and sounds of Memphis. Periodically we'll update this area and feature a new place to visit, an interesting restaurant, or just a few facts about Memphis you may not know. We hope that you'll learn a little bit about this historic city and that our efforts will excite you even more about our upcoming fair.
For our first feature article, we've decided to fill you in on a few little-known facts about Memphis:
~ Memphis is home to St. Jude's Children's Hospital which was founded in 1962 by Danny Thomas. Thousands of children are treated for terminal diseases at the facility every year. More than 16,000 children have been treated at the center since its opening.
~ Clarence Saunders opened his first full self-service grocery store, The Piggly Wiggly, opened in Memphis in 1916.
~ 24 of the 97 stars featured in the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame are from within a 100-mile radius of Memphis.
~ Volney, the lion who roared at the beginning of all the old MGM movies, lived at the Memphis Zoo until his death in 1944.
~ Memphis is the home to FedEx, the world's largest overnight package delivery company.
~ Naval Air Station Millington is located here, where orders regarding future duty stations are processed daily.
~ Elvis Presley performed his first concert in Memphis in 1954. He later went on to build his famous home, Graceland, in Memphis and was interred there after his death in his home on August 16, 1977
